Short October!

October came and went so quickly with a two week Fall Break!  But, that didn't stop our preschoolers from learning a few things while in speech therapy!

We read Marvin K. Mooney, Will You Please Go Now? to focus on initial /g/ sounds.  The students learned this sound is the "noisy" tongue scraper.

After we read the story, we drew pictures about how we would "go" somewhere.  Miss Lorraine said she would "go in a pickle car!"

We cut out and colored gumballs to practice saying "guh" and "go!"

We ended our month getting to play a fun Halloween Bag Toss while practicing all of our speech sounds.

As quick as October was, we have a feeling that November will fly right into December!  Just a reminder that we WILL meet the week of November 4, November 11, and November 18.  We will NOT meet for speech the week of November 25.

Happy Friday!!!

September Sounds are FUN!

We have been having a LOT of fun in September!  In our speech sessions we have been focusing on initial and final consonants.

One of our favorite lessons was focused on the story "I Went Walking" where we focused on final /t/ sounds and marking final consonants in words.  We sang our "MaT Man" song and drew pictures of Mat Man to incorporate early handwriting strokes of horizontal, vertical, and circular songs.

Ms. Lorraine then asked each student what they like to eaT and the students drew pictures to go with their answers which helped us work on another preschool foundation to draw pictures to go with stories we tell.

To finish up "I Went Walking" the students got to crawl in the dark through a play tunnel.  At the end they looked for a sound card with a lantern and told their friends, "I wenT crawling and I found a ...."

Another week we focused on initial sounds and read "Wheels on the Bus."  The students got to paint a school bus picture.  They LOVED painting!!

Thank you again for sharing your children with us.  Ms. Lorraine and I love seeing them every week!  We will meet the weeks of September 23rd, 30th and October 7th.  Our preschool will be closed the weeks of October 14th and 21st for Fall Break!

Please return the Yankee Candle packets by September 30 with orders if you choose to place one.  This is the only student fundraiser for the Brownsburg Education Foundation for the year.  It usually raises at least $40,000 which is turned back to the schools to support our students!  I have been blessed to receive grants in the past as well.

Wishing you well!

Kicking off a Great Year!

What a great start to the new school year! Our groups are small to start, but I see them filling up very quickly. August has given us fun stories such as "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you see?" "Each Peach, Pear, Plum" and "Goodnight Moon."
We practicing making out weekly target sounds while rolling out play-doh. For our Goodnight Moon lesson we practiced making "moons" while focusing on using intial sounds and pushing our lips together. Some students worked on marking 3 or more syllables such as "elephant, banana, and umbrella."
Students practicing their target sounds by tossing a bean bag onto a flashcard and saying the word 3 times and then repeating the sentence.
Ms. Lorraine had a cool water experiment where the blue water went up the paper towel and the red water went up the paper towel and when the colors met in the middle, the paper towel turned PURPLE!
We explored textures and words like "smooth" and "rough" while making a moon and stars.
Just a reminder that classes on Tuesday, August 28 will NOT meet due to Ms. Sarah and Ms. Lorraine being out of the district for the entire day. Monday classes will NOT meet on Monday, September 2 due to the Labor Day holiday. Tuesday classes WILL meet on Tuesday, September 3 at their usual times! Have a great week! Update on Parking

We have just been informed that a fence is going up to separate our Early Childhood center from the Brown Car Rider line. This will require preschool parents to enter our parking lot off of EASTERN AVENUE. I do not believe you will be able to enter off of Grant Street any longer. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to call! 852-1046, ext. 2021

Awesome April!

After an energizing spring break, Phonology Preschool was back at 'em for April.  The kids have finished learning all of the Zoo Phonics animal cues to go with the uppercase letters.  YAY!

I think the thing the students loved most this month was making elephant toothpaste with Miss Stacey, our graduate SLP extern from Purdue University.

Just a reminder that Phonology is cancelled next week (April 29, 30, May 1, and 2) with the exception of Friday May 3 (due to last week's cancellation with the high water).

Miss Stacey's last day will be Friday, May 10.  We will miss her as she moves on to her hospital practicum.  We also want to congratulate her on her June wedding!!

Have a great weekend!

Brownsburg Early Childhood Center

The BCSC preschool staff is very excited to be moving to our own center next fall!  The Browsnburg Early Childhood Center (ECC) will be housed at 310 N. Stadium Drive.  If you have lived in Brownsburg a few years you will recognize this building as the former Brownsburg Recreation Center...and before that Lincoln Elementary.

We are excited to announce that preschool registration for our community preschool programs (2, 3, and 5 day--half days) is OPEN.  Parents can go to the BCSC home page (http://www.brownsburg.k12.in.us/) and the link is right there.  If you have sent in a paper copy of the application and $100 deposit to hold your spot, you will still need to complete the official registration on line.  Tuition information is available on the website.  The ECC will follow the Brownsburg school calendar.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Have a great week!
Ms. Sarah

We Love February

Just a reminder that Thursday, February 21 classes will NOT meet for Phonology.  This is correct with the sheet given to you at the beginning of the year (or your initial conference).  However, the Friday, February 22 8:15 AM WILL MEET (due to 2 meetings being weather cancellations).  Now, of course the weather channels are predicting ice and snow mix on Friday morning.  So let's keep our fingers crossed that we do not need to delay and therefore cancel yet again!

On that note, I am ready for SPRING!  Ms. Lorraine has been busy planning some fun activities for March.  Can't wait to see what "springs up!"

On Monday, February 25 a graduate student from Purdue University will be starting with us.  Stacy Leland is working on her Master's degree in Speech Pathology and will be working with Ms. Lorraine and I until May 10.  She will send out an introductory letter later in the week.  We are looking forward to having Ms. Stacy with us!  Ms. Stacy's externship with us is one of her last experiences before graduating from Purdue with her Master Degree.

February has been such a fun month!  Dental Health month, Valentine's day, and new letters S, T and U!  Just a reminder that we have a link for Zoo Phonics on the left of the blog!

Looking ahead--just a reminder that BCSC will be on Spring Break March Monday, March 25 through Friday, April 5.  Classes will resume on Monday, April 8, 2013!

Have a wonderful week!

January Fun!

This month has been crazy with the weather!  It's like Mother Nature can't figure out if she wants a warm January or a cold one!  But, nonetheless, the students have been enjoying a "Polar" January!

We've created a floating iceberg island for some arctic animals in our sensory table!

The students have read Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear? by Eric Carle.  We worked on articulation of our target sounds in the animal names.

We worked on using our speech and language in cooperative play with the Mega Blocks.

Our Zoo Phonics letters this month have been P, Q, and R.  Students have been using their targetted speech sounds to answer "what doing" questions and in social skill/cooperative play lessons.

The Brownsburg Community Preschool program has adopted HighScope as a curriculum and structure for our 2, 3, and 4 day classes, while the whole curriculum and structure won't fit in or work with a 1-hour phonology preschool class, Ms. Lorraine and I have used part of the structure during our circle.  The students will get to "read" our Morning/Afternoon message at circle to help them know what we have planned for the day.  Here is an example of Morning Message:

It is still winter and weather certainly is a little "bipolar" here in Indiana!  If Brownsburg Schools calls a 2-hour delay morning classes will NOT meet, but afternoon (1:15 and later) classes will meet at their normal time.  I will try to either post a message on the blog and/or send out an email if those days occur.  The "alternative" preschool schedule that is posted on delay notices refers to our 2, 3, and 4 day classes.

Upcoming reminders:  We will NOT be meeting the week of President's Day in February (February 18-February 22).  Brownsburg Schools will be closed for TWO weeks for Spring Break (March 25-April 5), so we will not be meeting those weeks.

Stacey Leland, a graduate student working on her Master's degree in speech-language pathology will begin a 9 week externship with us February 25, 2013.  She will be here through May 10, 2013.  Ms. Stacey is looking forward to working with our preschool staff and students.  She will send a letter home with the students introducing herself after she arrives.

Have a wonderful weekend.  Enjoy the 60 degree day today and bundle up for the 21 degree night for tomorrow night...crazy Indiana weather.
